What would you do if haunted by ghosts? Penny Palabras is a strong young woman finding her place in a world that doesn’t always make sense. She’s been troubled by the supernatural for years, but now a sinister Straw Man is stalking her and threatening her friends and family. Penny’s not like other kids – she’s learned a few spells and enchantments with the help of a local librarian. Together, they’ve found a way to banish the Straw Man. All Penny has to do is make a deal with a Devil, but all deals with Devils come at a price. What price would you pay to protect those you love?
Hot on the heels of the sprawling sci-fi comedy “Dead Drift,” writer/director Ken Carlson shifts gears to dive into creating a dark cinematic adaptation of writer/composer James B. Willard’s acclaimed comic “Penny Palabras.” After successfully crowdfunding the creation of the graphic novel, Willard and Carlson began collaborating to bring Penny Palabras to the screen. Together, the two are producing a series that will explore thematic psychological elements every teenager struggles with – from social anxiety, peer acceptance, and depression to love, loyalty and protection of family and friends. Carlson describes the show as “Gaiman-esque,” blurring the lines between reality and dream, occupying the liminal space between “Donnie Darko and Harry Potter”.
Penny Palabras will star actor Deena Ingley as the titular character. Several other fantastic Seattle area actors have signed on to the project, including Bill Read Jr. as the shadowy Straw Man, and Alyssa Kay as the Tiger Devil. Director of photography Travis Blood has come aboard to help translate the vision from comic to screen. Shooting starts in April on a proof of concept trailer. Using the trailer, Carlson, Willard and team plan to leverage the combined fan bases of Penny Palabras and Dead Drift to crowdfund production of the seven episode series.
So – what nightmares haunt you in the night?
